Anger Management^ Flashcards
Cognitive Behaviour Therapy
Novaco
- Cog factors trigger emo responses
- Lead to aggressive acts
- Being angry is positively reinforced by the person feeling in control
Anger Management
Type of CBT
Teach how to recognize the cog factors that cause anger
Develop conflict-resolution techniques without violence
Cognitive Preparation
Off reviews experiences to recognise pattern in anger
Identify the triggers and whether their interpretation are (ir)rational
- Therapist role is to highlight the irrational response
Skills Acquisition
Off are given techniques to help in anger-inducing situations
Cog – pos self-talk for calmness
Beh – assertiveness training to become an automatic response (how to communicate healthy)
Physiological – using a relaxation technique to replace angry responses
Application Practice
Off can practice skills in a controlled envi
Needs commitment as off need to visualise the scenario as real
With confidence from the therapist to provoke the off
If the off responds correctly, they are positively reinforced by the therapist
Research Support
Positive outcome with young off
Keen et al
- Studied the process in 17-21 yrs old who did NAMP (type of AM)
- 8, 2 hour sessions
- First 7 within 3 weeks and the final after a month
- At first they didn’t take it seriously, but the result was overall positive
Off Reported
- Increased awareness of AM difficulties
- Increased capacity to exercise self-control
Better than Beh Modification
Benefits of AM are more long lasting than BM
AM targets the cause of offending while BM only deals with effect/symptoms
AM allows off to be more introspective about beh and find ways to manage themselves
VS Better than Beh Modification
follow up studies disagree that AM has better results
Blackburn
- AM is effective in short tern, but not in long term reoffending
- Could be due to the role play element not reflecting reality accurately
AM may not reduce reoffending
Expensive
AM needs specialists to treat the off
So, prisons may not have funding for AM
And it can be a waste of money if the off are not committed to improve
It also takes time which adds to the cost
Likely won’t work in most prison envi and does not benefit the economy
Individual Differences
AM’s success depends on Ind factors
Howells et al
- Investigation with Australian off
- P in AM program had little impact compared to CG with no treatment
Not true for all off, as highest effectiveness was in:
- Those with high levels of anger had big progress
- And those who were open to change and motivated
AM may benefit only some off
Anger & Offending
AM suggests there is a straightforward causal relationship between them
Assumes anger is imp before offending as it provides the emo state necessary
But the assumptions may be false
Loza & Loza-Fanous
- No differences in levels of anger between violent and non-violent off
- AM programs may be misguided as they give off a justification for their beh
