anesthetics Flashcards
inhaled anesthetic that is a better choice for patients with impaired myocardial function because it depresses contractility less BUT it can cause a significant rise in HR
Isoflurane (Forane)
inhaled anesthetic with lowest MAC
-good choice for asthma patients as it does not induce coughing
-hyperventilation can speed induction in this case
-does not increase HR
Adverse: fulminant hepatic failure
Halothane
minimal alveolar concentration required to prevent a response to a surgical incision in 50% of the population
Minimal Alveolar Concentration
rapid induction with this inhaled anesthetic
good for asthma patients as it does not induce coughing
Sevoflurane (Ultane)
rapid induction with this inhaled anesthetic
MAC >100
not good for use when needing to manipulate a fetus or for extraction of placenta, because it has little effect on uterine musculature
nitrous oxide
Levels of depth of anesthesia
- analgesia
- excitement
- surgical anesthesia
- medullary depression
actions of volatile anesthetics
- depress cardiac contractility and therefore MAP
- cause bronchodilation
- raise apneic threshold and decrease vent response to hypoxia
- decrease mucocilliary function in the airway
- decreased glomerular filtration rate
- relax uterine muscle (except NO)
- produce carbon monoxide
blood:gas partition coefficient
lower numbers indicate less solubility in the blood and therefore faster induction
