anesthetic agents Flashcards
MOA
locally- inhibit N conduction by reducing the permeability of the nerve membrane to Na
bupivacaine/marcaine
long acting anesthetic
bicarbonate
- added to accelerate the anesthetic penetration- inc the % of non-ionized form
- diminishes the “sting” of the injection
color of labels
blue- no epi
red- contains epi
benzonatete/tessalon
local anesthetic & non-narcotic antitussive
MOA- numbs stretch receptors in the bronchus
PO- SOFT GELS- “tessalon pearls”
minimum alveolar concentration(MAC)
- the measure of potency of an inhaled anesthetic
- volume % concentration of an inhaled anesthetic that is noted to have caused immobility in 50% of subjects
malignant hyperthermia
-potential SE for all anesthetics
-unknown MOA
-causes pt’s muscles to become very ridged- results in a rise in pt’s body temperature to 105+
when suspected- anesthetic agent is immediately withdrawn
-ANTIDOTE- DANTROLENE- a sodium muscle relaxant, abolishes excitation-contraction coupling in muscle cells
