Anesthesia Machine Set up Flashcards
Y/Circle Breathing System
Used in animals over 10kg. It is considered a Rebreathing system. Mainly want to use this in Sheep!
Universal F
Used in animals over 10kg. It is considered a Rebreathing system. Mainly want to use this in Donkeys!
Mapleson D
Used in animals under 10kg. Connects to the bane block. It is considered a Non-rebreathing system. Mainly used in small dogs and cats!
Mapleson F
Used in animals generally under 3kg. Is independent in which the reservoir bag connects to the tubing itself not to the machine. It is considered a Non-rebreathing system. Mainly used in tiny patients, ferrets, small cats, etc.
What breathing system would you use for a. 20kg dog, b. 120kg donkey, c. 35kg sheep, d. 2kg ferret
a. Circle/Y or Universal F
b. universal F
c. Circle/Y
d. Mapleson F
Calculate the bag size for….
25kg dog
50 x 25 / 1000
1.25L
Round up…. 2L bag
Calculate the O2 flow rate for….
a 120 kg donkey
System used: Universal F
Induction: 30 x 120 /1000 = 3.6L/min
Maintenance: 10 x 120 /1000 = 1.2L/min
Calculate the O2 flow rate for…
a 2kg ferret
System used: Mapleson F
Induction and Maintenance the same for patients on non-rebreathing systems: 200x2/1000 = 0.4
The lowest flow in these cases is 1L/min so just round up
How do you Leak test the machine from square one to finish?
- connect the green O2 cord to the wall and white scavenge to the wall.
- connect the same cords, green and white to the machine
- connect your system to machine including tubes and reservoir bag (and scavenge if mapleson f)
- connect gas line to machine from system
- close popoff valve
- place finger over the end of the tube
- fill until pressure reaches 30
- allow to sit for 30 seconds
- if no leak, open popoff, squeeze bag and then release finger from end of tube away from face
Oxygen flow rates for a small animal on a rebreathing system
Induction: 80ml/kg/min
Maintenance: 30ml/kg/min
Recovery: 80ml/kg/min
Oxygen flow rates for a large animal on a rebreathing system
Induction: 30ml/kg/min
Maintenance: 10ml/kg/min
Recovery: 30ml/kg/min
Oxygen flow rates for an animal on a non-rebreathing system
Induction and Maintenance and Recovery all the same: 200ml/kg/min
*Minimum flow is 1L/min
