anesthesia drugs Flashcards
example of ester
procaine
example of amide
lidocaine
when is Carisoprodol used?
to treat acute, painful musculoskeletal conditions due to trauma, inflammation, and anxiety.
Other drugs used for acute spasticity include: Chlorphenesin Chlorzoxazone,Orphenadrin Cyclobenzaprine, Metaxalone, Methocarbamol
what does baclofen do?
it is a GABA analog acting at GABAb receptors which depresses neuronal activity, decreasing the frequency and degree of muscle spasms and reduces muscle tone.
when is baclofen used?
Used for paraplegic or quadraplegic patients with spinal cord lesions caused by either multiple sclerosis or trauma. Intrathecal Baclofen use for management of severe spasticity/pain when nonresponsive to medication by other routes of administration
why is baclofen the spasmolytic drug of choice?
it produces less sedation than diazepam and less peripheral muscle weakness than dantrolene.
what is diazepam effective for?
for both acute spasms and chronic spasticity
who is diazepam indicated for?
for patients with spinal cord lesions, cerebral palsy, or cord transection
what is diazepam’s effect due to?
action in the spinal cord
what drug is tizanidine related to?
clonidine
what does tizanidine do?
- enhances both pre-& postsynaptic inhibition in the spinal cord
- inhibits nociceptive transmission (dorsal horn)
which spasmolytic is used in individuals with alcohol addiction?
baclofen
what is an example of a peripheral spasmolytic?
dantrolene
how does dantrolene work?
works directly on the muscle by inhibiting calcium release necessary for muscle relaxation
what is dantrolene most effective for?
spasticity with cerebral origin such as multiple sclerosis or cerebral palsy
