Anesthesia 2 Flashcards
ASA* scores:
Subjective assessment of a patient’s overall health.
I Completely healthy
II Mild systemic disease
III Severe systemic disease (not incapacitating)
IV Incapacitating disease (constant threat to life)
V Not expected to live 24 hours
E. Emergency surgery - (put after roman numeral)
Premeditation role:
Provides optimum conditions for surgery/anesthesia.
Decreases: anxiety, fear, resistance to induction and side effects (vomiting, salivation, bradycardia).
MAC sparing and analgesic.
Tranquilizers and Sedatives:
Phenothiazines
Butyrophenones
Benzodiazepines
Alpha 2 agonists
Opioids
Guaiphenesin
Name a Phenothiazine:
Acepromazine
Acepromazine MOA:
Dopamine receptor blockade (antagonism)
Alpha 1 adrenergic receptor mediates the vasodilation and decrease in BP and thermoregulatory control.
Acepromazine dose rate:
0.02-0.05 mg/kg
IV/IM/SC/oral
Butyrophenone name and MOA:
Azaperone (-pigs)
Primary action dopamine antagonist
Benzodiazepines MOA:
GABA receptor agonist
List of Benzodiazepines:
Diazepam
Midazolam
Zolazepam
Zolitil
Climazolam
Diazepam
Painful IM and unreliable sedative alone.
Effective in compromised patients, CV and respiratory parameters well maintained.
Reduces MAC good sedation in combination.
Anti-convulsant
Midazolam
Shorter acting than diazapam
Water soluble - well tolerated IM
Unpredictable sedative (agitation and excitement in SAs and ataxia in horses).
MAC sparing
Dissociative anaesthetics + Benzodiazepine used for wildlife:
Zoletil
(Tiletamine combined with Zolazepam)
