Side effects of Fe therapy
Painful injections
Oral causes GI upset
Fe deficiency causes Hypochromic, microcytic anemia

B9: Folic acid

Epogen (Epoetin)
B9: Folic acid deficiency causes
Pregnancy, lactation, intestinal pathology preventing reabsorption (Crohns disease), alcoholism
Folate required for DNA synthesis
Causes mega lactic anemia
B12 deficiency
Pernicious anemia
Also causes megiblastic anemia, so often given with B9
Darbepotin (Aranesp) side effects
High risk for abuse!!
Stroke, tumor, thrombosis, HTN, death
Hydroxyurea MOA
Causes sicke cell hemoglobin to be diluted out due to production of fetal hemoglobin, particularly with epo alpha
Pentoxyfilline
Rheologic modifier: increased flexibility of RBC so don’t get stuck in capillaries
Future possibility of stroke, TIA, diabetic ulcers, etc
