What is androgeny
A
- Personality type with balance of male/female traits and behaviours
- Those who have equal have better mental health as are better equip for a range of contexts

What is used to test androgeny
A
Androgynous is high masculine high feminine

It is valid and reliable
A
- Developed by 50 males/ females to rate 200 intems as male/female
- The piloted BSRI with 1000 students, it corresponded to their own description of their gender identity
- Students retested a month later had similar scores (test-retest) giving high reliability

Why might androgeny not be associated with well being
A
- Masculine traits more valued in western cultures

How does it have low temporal validity
A
- 40 years old
- Male/female typical behaviour has changed a lot since then
- Scale devised from western US students so traits deemed as masculine or feminine may not be shared by society’s

Oversimplifies gender
A
- Gender too complex a concept to be quantified in single score
- Questionnaire open to interpretation and also requires insight into ones gender they may not have
