Ancylostomatoidea (hookworms) Flashcards
where are members of ancylostomatoidea usually located within the host and what is the common name
small intestine
hookworms
what are the usual hosts for hookworms and what do they feed on
dogs, cats, ruminants, pigs, humans
blood/tissues
what features are different in ancylostomatinae and bunostominae (the two subfamilies)
ancylostomatinae have teeth while bunostominae have cutting plates
what genera are in ancylostomatinae? (1)
bunostominae? (4)
ancylostoma
bunostomum
uncinaria
globocephalus
necator
what is the lifecycle of a hookworm
- eggs passed in feces
- L1->L3
- skin penetration or ingestion
- -skin-> blood vessel or lymphatic duct->lungs/trachea->SI
- -ingested->intestinal wall->SI
- L3->L4->adult
what are the hookworms of dogs (4) and where are they located
Ancylostoma caninum Ancylostoma brazilense ancylostoma ceylanicum Uncinaria stenocephala small intestine
what are the features of ancylostoma caninum
3 pairs of teeth
females lay 15000 eggs/day
skin penetration important (collagenase)
transmammary infection important
what routes of infection are important in ancylostoma caninum and what is the PPP
oral or skin penetration->blood/lymphatics-> lungs->trachea->SI
2 weeks PPP
pathogenesis of Ancylostoma caninum
- use blood for food & respiration
- females use 0.1 ml/day
- black tarry faeces
- microcytic, hypochromic anaemia
- heavy infections (pups) cause death
- strong immunity following exposure
- can cause eosinophilic enteritis in man
epidemiology of ancylostoma caninum
common in warm climates
sandy or loam areas are ideal for larvae
diagnosis of ancylostoma caninum
eggs in feces (dissimialr poles and 2-8 blastomeres)
egg counts high but eggs small (Uncinaria has a larger egg)
what are some facts about ancylostoma braziliense
common in tropical regions
less pathogenic than a caninum
cutaneous larvae in man- snake like and red under skin- itchy
what are some facts about uncinaria stenocephala
common in cooler areas (like VIC)
eggs larger than ancylostoma caninum
L3 are ingested and no extra intestinal migration
less pathogenic
what are the hookworms of cats
Ancylostoma braziliense
Ancylostoma tubaeformae**
Uncinaria stenocephala
Ancylostoma ceylanicum
what are the hookworms of ruminants? what animals do they affect and where
bunostomum trignocephalum, sheep, SI
bunostomum phlebotomum, cattle, SI
