Ancient Metals Flashcards
What are the properties of metals.
Metals have high electrical conductivity and high thermal conductivity. Metals are malleable, ductile, and lusterous.
Define Metallic Bonding
In a crystal lattice, the electron orbitals overlap and electrons easily move from atom to atom.
Define electron sea.
The large amount of free (or conduction) electrons in the metal lattice.
Why do metals have high electrical conductivity?
Since electrons in the electron sea can easily move from atom to atom, electrons can easily flow through the metal when a voltage is applied.
Why do metals have high thermal conductivity?
Heating a metal adds kinetic energy to the electrons, and the electron sea allows for the quick spreading of thermal energy of the electrons throughout the metal.
What is an alloy?
A mixture of metals.
Describe some common alloys.
Pewter is an alloy of tin and lead.
Bronze is an alloy of tin and copper.
What is chemical symbol, Latin name, and uses of iron.
