what is the hippocratic method
- observe all using your senses: sight, hearing, touch, smell, taste
- gather observations w/o prejudice or expectation
- study the patient rather than the diasease (hollistic view)
- evaluate honestly and tell the patient
- assist nature to heal
hippocrates humors (fluids)
air = blood = sanguine fire = yellow bile = choleric earth = black bile = melancholic water = phlegm = phlegmatic
hippocrates phases of illnesses
degeneration of humors:
coction
crisis
evacuation of the humors in excess
Rudolf Virchow (1858)
replace humoral pathology- interpretation of illnesses by humours
- instead replaced with cellular-pathology
ex. type 1 diabetes: disease of cells not humors
inheritance
rudolf virchow:
- all parts of the body produce seed material: traits in offspring arise from the mixing of male and female seed material
pangenesis: body sends info about experiences to sex organs and transmits to offspring
hippocrates anatomy and physiology
based on dissections of animals - extended to people
- pneuma enters lungs –> left side of heart –> arteries
- brain is a radiator that cools the blood and seperates water/mucus
