FIRST- carthage was more powerful than rome. rome wanted sicily, so they built a navy and won it.
SECOND- (218-202) northern italy. hannibal was a carthiganian general. rome won against them and made them pay war debt and dismantle its army.
THIRD (149-146) - rome demanded carthage move inland. they said no. rome killed them, burned them, and salted their graves (first historical genocide)
the persian wars
-greek (athens and sparta) vs persian empire
-decisive battle in 479 bce, persia was defeated
-athens became the dominant polis in greece
the peloponnesian war
-athens was doing good culturally but was unstable politically (trying to be an imperial power)
-sparta went to war with them and won
-caused a power vacuum
-alexander the great came in
government in early republic of rome
-magistrates were elected annual from members of the senate
-plebians vs patricians. resistance got plebs some power via tribunes
-twelve tavles
first triumverate
-pompet, marcus licinius crassus, gaius julius caesar
-each had a region
-julia was caesar’s wife and pompey’s daughter. she died
-crassus was killed
-pompey didn’t want the triumverate anymore and took over
-caesar invaded and became dictator
