Tell me the institutions in Ancient Greece (Athens)
Eklesia or Assembly, Boule or Council of 500, Courts and Magistrates
What is the Eklesia?
Eklesia was the most important political body. It voted on laws, decide on war and peace and elected the rulers. It was made up of all Athenian citizens over the age of 20
What is the Boule?
They prepared the issues to be discussed in the Assembly. It was made up of 500 people over the age of 30. They were choosed by ballot.
What are the Courts?
They were elected each year.
What are Magistrates?
were officials who carried out the decisions of the Assembly. The “ten strategoi” commanded the armyand navy and were important magistrates.
What were the institutions in Sparta?
The institutions were Apella or Assembly, Gerousia or Council of Elders, ephors and the courts.
What was the Apella?
The Apella proved the proposals of the Gerousia and the ephors.
What was the Gerousia?
The Gerousia proposed and drafted laws and presented them to the Apella. It also served as a supreme court.
What were the ephors?
The ephors carried out the decisions of the Gerousia and the Apella. They controlled the two kings and they decided foreign policy.
So, what did the two kings do?
They held religious and military authority.
What were the differebt political systems?
Democracy and aristocrcy
How did it start?
Sparta was ruled by aristocracy.
Aristocracy started when a group of people called “aristoi”, which means “the best” started to rule.
The states held by a single person were called Tyrannies.
During the 6th century, democracy began, the best example of democracy polis is Athen
What does aristocracy mean?
“Goverment of the best”
What does democracy mean?
“Goverment of the people”
What does oligarchy mean?
“Ruled by the few”
