Hieroglyphics
3150 BC to 400 AD, carved into temples and tombs into stone slabs.
3200 BC onwards appeared on small ivory tablets as labels for grave goods (e.g King Scorpian) + ceremonial surfaces (Narmer Palette)
Two functions of writing
Ceremonial display script (carved) and service of royal and temple administrations (written)
Restricted use shown by
Coffin of Khnum-Nakht and slab stela of Prince Wepemnofret
Why carved?
Desire to preserve the memory of themselves for perpetuity - Nefermaat “He is one who made his hieroglyphs (lit. “Gods”) that cannot be erased”
Define nature of hieroglyphics, gift from gods and ensures immortality in the after life
Hieratic script

Writing implements, ink cakes and rolls of papyrus - inside lid used to jot down personal details and amount individual was paid to carry out tasks
Main use of writing
Primarily utilitarian administrative purpose
