Confucianism
A philosophy based on the ideas of respect, Started by Confucius, Guided gov’t during the Han dynasty
Legalism
belief that people are born bad and need to be controlled, Started by Han Fe,
Guided gov’t during the Qin dynasty
Mandate of Heaven
The belief that the ruler of China is chosen by the gods, the right to rule is granted by the gods, there can only be one ruler.
Warring states period
A time of civil war after the fall of the Zhou Dynasty, 7 dynasties fighting for control of China, time of chaos
Emperor Shi Huangdi
Unified China after the Warring States Period,
First Emperor of China
Created, a strict gov’t using Legalism
Feudal system
creates control by dividing land into smaller parts making it easier to rule,
The rich controlled the poor

a man-made barrier of walls across the northern border of China, protected the Silk Road and civilization
Mandate of Heaven
the belief that kings could only rule as long as the gods believed the king was worthy.
Dynasty
a line of rulers that come form the same family
Dynastic Cycle
The cycle of rise and fall dynasties.
Filial piety
the respect children owe their parents and ancestors.
Confucianism
It’s a religion or tradition where the way to keep society afloat is through relationships.
Daoism
A religious tradition that promotes living calmly in unity with nature.
Legalism
an idea based on the ideas of Han Fei. He believed that people were born bad and that the only way to achieve a strong society was through harsh punishment and rewards.
Li
Li describes the actions that are right because of the needs of society.
Yi
describes the actions that are just right and good
Hsiao
the principle of filial piety which is the idea that children should respect their parents.
Dao
means the way and also that everything in the universe is connected.
Wu wei
is the method of following the Dao. This involves living in harmony and letting things take their course.
Yin Yang
it means opposites fit together and depend on each other.
