Vertebral body shape of a thoracic vertebrae
Heart shaped

Relatively small
Spinous processes of thoracic vertebrae
Narrow, tapered and shingled.
Transverse processes of thoracic vertebrae
Project laterally and posterior.
Plane of apophyseal facets of thoracic vertebrae
In the frontal plane.

Unique feature of thoracic vertebrae
Costal articulations
Ligaments of the thoracic spine
Anterior and posterior longitudinal ligaments, ligamentum flava, intertransverse, interspinous and supraspinous ligaments.
Supraspinous ligament
Distal continuation of the ligamentum nuchae. Attache to the most posterior aspect of SPs from C7 to the sacrum. Taut during flexion and rotation.
Ribs
Long, flat bones with a head, neck and shaft portion.
True ribs
Have a direct attachment to the sternum via a costal cartilage. Includes ribs 1-7.
False ribs
Ribs which have an indirect attachment to the sternum via a costal cartilage. Includes ribs 8-10.
Floating ribs
Ribs which have no anterior attachment. Includes ribs 11 and 12.
Costovertebral articulations
The rib head articulates with the facet or demi-facet of the vertebral body.
