Anatomy - Ankle Flashcards
Joints of the ankle
Talocrural, subtalar and tibiofibular joints.
Talocrural joint
Articulation between the convex talus and the concave mortice.
Ankle mortice
Bony clasp which includes the medial and lateral malleoli and the distal tibia.
Classifications of the talocrural joint
Synovial hinge joint.
Subtalar joint
Articulation between the talus and calcaneous. The talus is concave and the calcaneous is convex.
Classifications of the subtalar joint
Synovial, gliding
Proximal tibiofibular joint
Articulation between the head of the fibular and the lateral condyle of the tibia.
Classifications of the proximal tibiofibular joint
Synovial, but functionally amphiarthrotic due to a dense joint capsule.
Distal tibiofibular joint
Articulation between the distal tibia and the distal fibula.
Classification of the distal tibiofibular joint
Synovial, but functionally amphiarthrotic due to a dense joint capsule.
Functions of the medial collateral ligaments of the ankle
Become taut and resist excessive dorsiflexion and eversion.
Medial collateral ligaments of the ankle
Anterior and posterior tibiotalar, tibiocalcaneal and tibionavicular.
Other name for the medial collateral ligaments of the ankle
Deltoid ligaments
Funtions of the lateral collateral ligaments
Become taut and resist excessive dorsiflexion and inversion.
Lateral collateral ligaments of the ankle
Anterior and posterior tibiofibular ligaments and calcaneofibular ligament.
