Anatomy Terms Flashcards
Abduction
Moving a body part away from the midline
Adduction
Moving a body part toward the midline
Dorsiflexion
Bending the foot upward
Plantar flexion
Bending the foot downward
Eversion
Turning the foot so that the sole is outward
Inversion
Turning the foot so that sole is inward
Extension
Straightening a joint so that the angle between its part is increased
Flexion
Bending a joint so that the angle between its part is decreased
Hyperextension
Moving the parts of a joint beyond the anatomical position
Pronation
Turning the hand so that the palm is downwards
Supination
Turning the hand so that the palm is upwards
Retraction
Moving a part backwards
Rotation
Moving a part around an axis
Frontal (coronal) plane
Sideways movement, divides body into anterior & posterior (movements include jumping jacks, side lunges) AXIS = antero posterior axis
Transverse (horizontal) plane
Left to right movement, divides body into upper & lower. (Movements include include hip twist, spin) AXIS = longitudinal axis
Sagittal (median) plane
Divides body into left & right. (Movements include lunges, squats, running, front rolls) AXIS = horizontal axis
Elevation
Movement in a superior direction
Depression
Movement in an inferior direction
Reposition
Thumb moves away from tip of other fingers
Opposition
Thumb moves towards the tip of other fingers
Circumduction
Movement of a body part in a circular pattern
Internal rotation
Turning the joint inwards
External rotation
Turning the joint outwards
Anterior
Front side of the body
Posterior
Back side of the body
Superior
Part of the body closer to head
Inferior
Located below another part
Medial
Closer to the middle of the body
Lateral
Further from midline
Proximal
Closer to the part attached to the torso
Distal
Farther from the part attracted
Superficial
On or close to the surface of the body
Deep
Further from surfacd
