Anatomy - Respiratory System Vocab Flashcards
alveolus/alveoli
structures located at the end of the respiratory tree, expand during inhalation, taking in oxygen, and shrink during exhalation, expelling carbon dioxide
Bronchial tree
made up of the trachea, the bronchi, and the bronchioles that transport air from the environment to the lungs for gas exchange
Bronchiole
deliver air to a diffuse network of alveoli in the lungs, oxygenated air is pulled into the bronchioles.
Larynx
protect the lower respiratory tract from aspirating food into the trachea while breathing
Lungs
bring oxygen into our bodies and send carbon dioxide out
Nasal cavity
Air moves through these passages during breathing.
Partial pressure
The partial pressure of oxygen is high in the alveoli and low in the blood of the pulmonary capillaries. This allows oxygen to diffuse across into blood.
Pharynx
the membrane-lined cavity behind the nose and mouth, connecting them to the esophagus.
Respiratory membrane
the surface where gas exchange between the alveoli and blood occurs in the lungs
Respiratory mucosa
The mucous membrane lining the respiratory tract, including the nasal cavity; the larynx; the trachea; and the bronchi tree.
Respiratory rhythmicity centers
controls breathing
Surfactant
Surfactant coats the alveoli. This prevents the alveoli from sticking together when your baby exhales.
Trachea
passage for air, moistens and warms it while it passes into the lungs, and protects the respiratory surface from an accumulation of foreign particles
Vital capacity
the maximum amount of air a person can expel from the lungs after a maximum inhalation
