Anatomy - Blood Vessels Vocab Flashcards
Anastomosis
cross-connection between adjacent channels, tubes, fibers, or other parts of a network.
Arteriole
small blood vessels that carry blood away from your heart, are connectors between your arteries and capillaries, they control your blood pressure and blood flow throughout your body
Artery
Arteries carry blood away from the heart
Blood pressure
the pressure of blood pushing against the walls of your arteries
Capillary
any of the fine branching blood vessels that form a network between the arterioles and venules
Hepatic portal system
the system of veins that transports blood from the digestive tract to the liver
Peripheral resistance
the resistance in the circulatory system that is used to create blood pressure, the flow of blood and is also a component of cardiac function
Pulmonary circuit
Pulmonary circuit
Pulse pressure
the difference between the upper and lower numbers of your blood pressure
Respiratory pump
a mechanism to pump blood back to the heart using inspiration
System circuit
provides the functional blood supply to all body tissue
Valve
valve, in anatomy, any of various membranous structures, especially in the heart
Vasoconstriction
the narrowing (constriction) of blood vessels by small muscles in their walls
Vasodilation
the widening of blood vessels as a result of the relaxation of the blood vessel’s muscular walls.
Vein
transports blood to the heart
