Anatomy - Blood Vocab Flashcards
cardiovascular system
an internal transport system network that connects all parts of the body (like the cooling system of a car)
blood
circulating fluid of the body, specialized connective tissue that contains cells suspended in a fluid matrix
coagulation
(blood clotting) prevents excessive bleeding when blood vessels are injured, blood changes from a liquid to a thick gel like clot. PART OF HEMOSTASIS
embolus
anything that moves through the blood vessels until it reaches a vessel that is too small to let it pass
erythrocyte
red blood cells that carry oxygen
fibrin
a protein formed by fibrinogen when blood clotting
fibrinolysis
the breakdown of blood clots
hematocrit
the percentage by volume of red cells in your blood
hemoglobin
a protein in your red blood cells that carries oxygen to your body’s organs and tissues and transports carbon dioxide from your organs and tissues back to your lungs.
hemopoiesis
the production of blood cells and platelets, which occurs in the bone marrow.
hemostasis
the clotting at a site of excess bleeding
leukocyte
white blood cells
plasma
a component of blood. makes up 55 percent and is made up of 02 percent water
platelets
they help to stop excess bleeding during hemostasis
serum
plasma, minus the clotting proteins
