Anatomy & Physiology- Pure Blood Flashcards
What is the blood made up of?
Erythrocytes, leukocytes, plasma & platelets
Where are lymphoid stem cells created?
In the lymphatic system
Where are myeloid stem cells created?
In the bone marrow
Why are erythrocytes the shape they are?
They are concave so that they can take up more oxygen, and can fit through capillaries
How are RBC’s made?
They start as pluripotent stem cells in the bone marrow, then differentiate into pro erythroblasts. The synthesis of Hb and no nucleus makes it become a reticulocyte which matures, in the bone marrow, for 1-2 days then becomes the erythrocyte.
What are the 2 different types of leukocytes?
Granular & agranular
What are the 4 main blood groups?
A, B, O and AB
How does the RBC’S combat the cross reactions, and different blood types?
E.g., blood type A can only have antibody B
What are the 2 major blood groups?
ABO and rhesus
What are the 3 alleles for the rhesus blood group?
C, D and E
What is the D antigen responsible for?
The rhesus status of on individual. If D is present, the individual is Rh+
