Anatomy/Physiology Flashcards
How many organ systems are in the body?
11
Integumentary system?
Protects the body & helps regulate temp. Structures: skin & sweat glands.
What is the largest organ in the body?
The skin.
Skeletal system?
Supports & protects body. Structure include bones and joints.
Nervous system?
Brain, spinal cord, nerves, special sense organs; uses action potentials to regulate body activities.
Endocrine system?
Hormone producing cells and glands; regulates body activities through hormones.
Cardiovascular or Circulatory system?
Blood, heart and vessels; pumps blood, carries O2 and nutrients to cells and eliminates CO2.
Lymphatic system?
Lymphatic fluid and vessels, spleen, thymus gland, lymph nodes and tonsils; returns proteins and fluid to blood, protects against disease.
Respiratory system?
Lungs; transfers O2 from air to blood and CO2 from blood to exhaled air.
Digestive system?
Organs of intestinal tract; achieves physical and chemical breakdown of food, absorbs nutrients, eliminates solid wastes.
Urinary system?
Kidneys, ureters, bladder, produces, stores and eleminates urine, eliminates wastes and regulates volume and chemical composition of blood.
Reproductive system?
Gonads; produce sperm or ova
What are the major parts of the brain?
Cerebrum, midbrain, cerebellum, and medulla oblongata.
Cerebrum?
Has many neurons (nerve cells) and covers the majority of the brain. Controls movement and interrupts information gathered by the senses. It consist of 2 hemispheres: left and right.
Left hemisphere in the cerebrum?
Contains the areas for speech, mathematics and logic.
