Anatomy & Physiology. Flashcards
The study of the functions of the organs and systems perform
Physiology
The study of structures that can be seen with the naked eye
Gross anatomy
The study of structures too small to be seen except through a microscope is
Microscopic anatomy
OR histology
The basic unit of living matter (life)
Cells
A gel-like substance containing water, salt and nutrients obtained from food; makes up cells
Protoplasm
Control center of cell activities
Nucleus
Production department of the cell, where most of the cell’s activities take place
Cytoplasm
Outer surface of the cell which encloses the protoplasm
Cell membrane
The chemical process in which cells receive nutrients (food) for cell growth and reproduction
Metabolism
The process of building up larger molecules from smaller ones
(Phase of metabolism)
Anabolism
The process of breaking down larger molecules or substances into smaller ones
(Phase of metabolism)
Catabolism
Groups of cells of the same kind make up?
Tissues
5 types in human body
Tissue that covers and protects body surfaces and internal organs:
Epithelial tissue
This tissue supports, protects and holds the body together
Connective tissue
This tissue coordinates body functions in addition to carrying messages to and from the brain and spinal cord
Nerve tissue
This tissue contracts, when stimulated, to produce motion
Muscular tissue
This tissue carries food, waste products and hormones
Liquid tissue
Separate body body structures that perform specific functions; they are composed of two or more different tissues
Organs
