Anatomy of the Skull Flashcards
What is the neurocranium?
The cranial vault, bones of the head
What is the viscerocranium?
Facial skeleton
What is the ethmoid bone?
The bone right at the top of the nose
Describe the sphenoid bone
Has foramen for the trigeminal nerve within the greater wing of the sphenoid bone and anterior clinoid processes have optic canal passing through
What are the bones of the orbit?
Maxilla bone (most medial), frontal bone (superiorly), lacrimal bone, ethmoid bone, sphenoid bone (with superior orbital fissure), then zygomatic (most lateral)
Which cranial nerves pass through the superior orbital fissure?
CN III, IV, V1, VI
Which cranial nerve goes through the foramen rotundum?
CN V2 (maxillary)
Which cranial nerve goes through the foramen ovale?
CN V3 (mandibular)
Which cranial nerves go through the internal auditory meatus?
CN VII and VIII
Which cranial nerves go through the internal jugular foramen?
CN IX, X and XI
Which cranial nerve passes through the hypoglossal canal?
CN XII
Where do venous sinuses of the brain eventually drain?
Internal jugular vein
What do the meningeal arteries supply?
Go between the skull and dura (only supply dura and bone) and surround the cranium
What do the carotid and vertebral arteries supply?
The brain itself
What is the tentorial notch?
Gap through which the cerebral peduncles pass
