Anatomy of the Respiratory System Flashcards

1
Q

Respiratory Quotient

A

VCOz/VOz - Tells me the (rate / min) amount of COz produced vs. the (rate / min) amount of Oz consumed.

Q

What muscle are involved in inspirations and Exhalation?

  • Explain to me
A

Inspiration (active expand cavity): External Intercostals (ribs go up and lateral) & Diaphragm (contract)

Exhalation (passive relaxation): (depress cavity): Internal Intercostals (contract) (down) when body needs to increase ventilation excessive exercise

1) Name the structure that regulates respiration?
2) What stimulates them?
3) Which stimulant has a dominating effect?
5) Simultaneous change?

A

1) Chemoreceptors
2) oxygen, carbon dioxide, pH
3) Arterial (a) COz levels PaCOz

A

VC - Vital Capacity - gas exhaled after max inhalation
RV - Residual Vol. - gas remaining after max exhalation
FRC - Functional Residual C. - gas after tidal exhalation

Q

What is MMEF? What is MET? How are both determined? Why is MMEF a valuable parameter?

A

Maximal Mid-Expiratory Flow Rate?
Mid-Expiratory Time - time expiration from 75% VC to 25%
MMEF - 1/2(VC) / MET
Least reliable parts of the curve are cut out with this parameter - middle is most reliable
