Anatomy of the Pelvis Flashcards
What makes up the bony pelvis?
2 hip bones, sacrum and coccyx
What joints are involved?
3 type, 4 overall
What joint is between the ilium of the hip and the sacrum?
Sacroiliac joint
Joint between the sacrum and the coccyx
Sacrococcygeal joint
Between the 2 pubis of the bodies of the hip joint
Pubic symphysis
Where is the pelvic inlet located?
Between the greater and lesser pelvis
What are the edges of the pelvic inlet called?
Pelvic brim
Posterior border of the pelvic inlet?
Sacral promontory (upper sacrum) + sacral wings (ala)
Lateral border of the pelvic inlet?
Arcuate line on the inner surface of the ilium + pectineal line on superior pubic ramus
Anterior border of the pelvic inlet?
Pubic symphysis
Where is the pelvic outlet located?
End of the lesser pelvis
Posterior border of the pelvic outlet?
Coccyx (tip of)
Lateral border of the pelvic outlet?
Ischial tuberosity and the sacrotuberous ligament
Anterior border of the pelvic outlet?
Pubic arch (sub pubic angle (larger in women))
Key features of a gynacoid pelvis?
Less prominent ischial spines, wider and broader outlet, oval shaped (greater bispinous diameter, less pronounced sacral promontory
Which spinal nerves form the basis of the sacral plexus?
S1 - S4 (anterior rami) + lumbar spinal nerves L4 and L5
The nerves descend down what?
Posterior pelvic wall
The nerves of the sacral plexus have two main destinations?
Leave pelvis via greater sciatic foramen + stay and innervate pelvis and perineum and pelvic organs
What nerves leaves the pelvis via the greater sciatic foramen?
Superior gluteal nerve, inferior gluteal nerve and the pudendal nerve, posterior femoral cutaneous
Motor Functions of the pudendal nerve?
innervates skeletal muscles of the perineum, external urethral sphincter, external anal sphincter, and levator ani
Sensory functions of the pudendal nerve?
Penis and clitoris and skin of the perineum
What separates the pelvic cavity from the perineum?
pelvic floor
