Anatomy Flashcards
What do the ovaries produce?
Ova
Why are the ovaries known as endocrine glands?
They secrete oestrogen and progesterone
Where are the ovaries located?
Either side of the uterus, beneath uterine tubes, within the broad ligament
What is the broad ligament?
A double-layered sheet of peritoneum that contain the ovaries
What surrounds the ovaries?
Tunica albuginea; a thin fibrous capsule
What covers the tunica albuginea?
Germinal epithelium; modified layer of the peritoneum
What catches the ova as they are released?
Fimbrae of the uterine tubes; drape over the ova
Where are the fimbrae located?
Ovarian fossa
What are the ligaments involved in securing the uterus?
Ovarian ligament and the infundibulopelvic ligament (suspensory ligament of the ovary)
