Anatomy of Phonation- section 3 Cavities lecture 10/26 Flashcards
What is Aditus?
Entry to the larynx
Where is the vestibule located?
It is between entryway and ventricular (false) folds
What are the ventricular folds not used for?
Typical phonation
What is the aryepiglottic folds?
- Lateral walls
- it assists in protecting the airway during swallowing by deflecting the epiglottis over the laryngeal aditus.
What is the Rima vestibule?
space between the ventricular folds
Where is the glottis?
The space between the vocal folds
Where is the anterior commissure?
The anterior-most opening posterior to the angle of the thyroid cartilage
- this is where the vocal folds originate
Where is the posterior commissure?
Between the arytenoid cartilages
What is the length of the glottis at rest?
approx 20mm in adults between the anterior and posterior commissures
How wide is the posterior glottis?
8 mm wide at rest but is typically variable
Why would the posterior glottis be variable during speaking?
The vocal folds are blown apart and don’t stay still.
What are the lateral margins of the glottis?
Vocal folds and the arytenoid cartilages
What is a free margin?
anterior 3/5 of folds is the vibrating element of the voice
How much of the folds are referred to as the cartilaginous glottis?
posterior 2/5
What does the thyroepiglottis do?
dialates the laryngeal opening
