Anatomy of Phonation Flashcards
What are two functions of the Larynx?
- Seal to respiratory system
- Phonation
Where is Larynx located?
Situated between the pharynx and the trachea
Name the 7 cavities of the Laryngeal Region
- Valleculae
- Pyriform Sinus
- Aditus
- Vestibule
- Ventricle
- Glottis
- Subglottal Atrium
Valleculae
Located at base of tongue
Between tongue and the epiglottis
Pyriform Sinus
Located at the back of the larynx/pharynx
Between thyroid and pharyngeal wall.
Entrance to esophagus
Aditus
Superior margin of th larynx
Vestibule
Upper cavity of the larynx between aditus and the “false” vocal folds
Ventricle
Laterally space between the false vocal folds and the true vocal folds
Glottis
Space between vocal folds
Sub-glottal Atrium
Entry to the trachea
Hyoid Bone
(name subparts)
U shaped
Corpus, Greater Cornu, Lesser Cornu
Flexible elavation of larynx
Hyoid Functions
- Superior attachment for some extrinsic laryngeal muscles
- Supportive structure for root of tongue
- Laryngeal cartlilages and hyoid pulled together as part of swallow
Cricoid Cartilage
Upper most tracheal ring
Foundation of the larynx to which thyroid and arytenoids attach
Thyroid Cartilage
- Thyroid Laminae-two frontal plates
- Superior & Inferior cornu
Cricoid-Thyroid Articulation
Allows for a variety of movements
forward/down
forward and back
Arytenoid Cartilages
Name 4 Parts
Pair of small pyramid-shaped cartilages
- Apex
- Base
- Vocal Processes
- Muscular Processes
Cricoid-Arytenoid Articulation
Joint allows for
left-right movement
rotating to move downward toward midline
Corniculate & Cuneiform Cartilages
Corniculate- just above arytenoid carts
Cuneiform- anterior & lateral to ^
Function- provide additional structure to the aryepiglottic folds to stiffen them
Thyrohyoid Connections (3)
- Lateral thyrohyoid ligament (sup cornu to greater cornu)
- Medial thyrohyoid ligament (notch of sup lamina to corpus of hyoid)
- Thyrohyoid membrane (fills in space between inferior hyoid & superior thyroid)
Epiglottal Connections (3)
- Hyoepiglottic Ligament- corpus of hyoid to epiglottis
- Thyroepiglottic Ligament- Thyroid lamina to lower stem of epiglottis
- Glossoepiglottic Ligaments- sides of tongue to lower sides of epiglottis
