Anatomy Of Breast Flashcards
Explain the vertical and horizontal surface anatomy
Vertical- Extend from 2nd - 6th ribs: midclavicular line
Horizantal- parasternal (lateral) border to mid maxillary line
How much does the breast extend to pecteralis major and serratus anterior
PM= 2/3 SA = 1/3
Where an external oblique muscle does the breast extend
Inferomedial quadrant
Where is the surface and any of the nipple
4th intercostal space - lateral to MCL
How many lobules are in each breast
15-20 = which open to lactiferous ducts and lactiferous sinus
What surrounds the lobules
- Connective tissue septum’s = called retinaculae cutis (Cooper’s ligament)
- Superior septum in breast=called suspensory ligament
What makes breast appear with a smooth contour
Fat between breast tissue
What is contained in the areola and nipple
Opening of lactiferous ducts
Sebaceous glands (Montgomery)
Involuntary muscle and lymphatics-deep
Explain the maxillary tail (spense)
Process of mammary tissues that extend up and lateral from 3rd rib in axilla then enters axilla in deep fascia
What is the medial and lateral blood supply
M: medial mammaryartenes and antenna intercostal arteries - internal thoracic artery (Subclavian artery branch)
L: lateral mammary branches- lateral thoracic arteries (axillary artery branch)
What other branches give blood to breast
Thoraco-acromial artery (AA)
Lateral branches = 2nd,3rd, 4th poster intercostal arteries (TA)
Explain venous drainage
Superficial vers to deep veins to maxillary, internal thoracic and posterior intercostal veins
Describe the lymphatic of the breast
Lymph from each mammary gland drains directly or indirectly via 7 groups of lymph nodes
5 of these groups are the maxillary lymph nodes
What are the 7 lymph nodes and what they accompany
- Pectoral /anterior = lateral thoracic artery, vein
- Subscapular/posterior= subscapular veins
- Humeral/lateral group = distal aouillary vein
- Central= intercostobrachial nodes
- apical /infraclavicular = proximal axillary vein
- Deltopectoral= detopectoral triangle
- Parasternal = Internal thoracic artery
How does the mammary tissue drain
- Subareolar pleaus - pectoral nodes
- medial border - parasternal nodes
- interomedial quadrant - subperitoneal and pelvis
- 75% via maxillary tail - pectoral nodes
