anatomy of blood vessels Flashcards
what is stroke volume
the volume of blood pumped out by a ventricle with each heartbeat, increases as the force of ventricular contraction increases, 70ml per beat, factors that influence SV- preload- stretch of cardiac muscles, contractility-ability to generate force, afterload-force on semilunar valves that ventricles must overcome to pump blood
systole
contraction phase of heart activity
diastole
period between contractions of relaxation phase of heart
cardiac cycle
one complete heartbeat, which both atria and ventricles contract and relax (0.8 secs)
what is Lub-dub heart sound
ub-closing of AV valve, dub-semilunar valves close
apex
part of heart to use stethoscope to hear heart
what is cardiac output
amount of blood pumped out by each ventricle in 1 minute, product of heart rate and stroke volume
what are things that modify heart rate
ANS (anatomical nervous system) controls (parasympathetic, sympathetic), Hormones and ions (epinephrine, thyroxine, calcium), physical factors (age, gender, exercise)
what’s the vascular system
system of closed blood vessels
what are arteries
vessel that carries blood away from the heart
what are veins
vessel that carries blood away from tissue and towards the heart
