Anatomy of blood flow in CNS and consequences of disruption Flashcards
How are the venous sinuses formed?
Folds in the dura mater, where the meningeal and periosteal layer
Recall the drainage of the venous sinsues
Drain backwards to confluence of sinuses then into internal jugular vein
Define “stroke”
Rapidly developing focal disturbance of brain function of presumed vascular origin of >24 hours duration
What percentage of strokes are infarcts vs haemorrhagic?
85% infarcts, 15% haemorrhagic
Define “TIA”
Transient Ischaemic Attack:
Rapidly developing focal disturbance of brain function of presumed vascular origin that resolves completely within 24 hours
Which ions have a higher concentration in CSF than blood?
Mg2+ and Cl-
Which ions have a lower concentration in CSF than blood?
K+ and Ca2+
