Anatomy Of A Long Bone Flashcards
Periosteum
Thin membrane covering the surface of a long bone
Medullary cavity
The central cavity of bone shafts where red bone marrow and or yellow bone marrow is stored
Compact bone
provide strength as well as more resistant to stress and less flexible
On the outside of the bone
Diaphysis
The shaft or elongated section of a long bone
Cancellous/spongy bone
Made up of spongy porous bone tissue that is filled with red bone marrow
Honeycomb structure that provides more flexibility
Most often towards the top of the bone
Epiphysis
The end part of a long bone it is enlarged
Proximal and distal ends
Epiphyseal growth plate
Layer of cartilage at the ends of long bones that allows growth and length to occur to reach mature height
It is near the top and bottom of bone
Epiphyseal line
A line marking the location of the former epiphyseal growth plate which ossifies when growth ceases
