Anatomy: Muscular System Flashcards
What are the three tissues of the muscular system?
- Skeletal
- Cardiac
- Smooth
What tissue attaches to bone and is involved in the movement of bones?
Skeletal
Describe the skeletal tissue
Striated and very strong
Which tissue is the only voluntary muscle tissue in the body?
Skeletal
What tissue can be found in the heart?
Cardiac
Is cardiac muscle striated?
Yes
Is cardiac muscle tissue voluntary or involuntary?
Involuntary
Where is smooth muscle tissue found?
Walls of hallow organs
- Stomach and intestines
- Blood vessels
- Eyes
- Skin
Which tissue is considered the weakest?
Smooth
Is smooth tissue involuntary or voluntary?
Involuntary (controls the unconscious part of the brain)
How many muscles are in the body?
About 700 named muscles
What tissue is attached by tendons?
Skeletal muscles
What are tendons?
Tough bands of connective tissue that have strong collagen fibers
What are collagen fibers?
Firmly attach the muscle to the bone
What powers the contraction and relaxation?
Adenosine triphosphate (ATP)
Muscular system
An integrated system in the body that is vital for controlling involuntary and voluntary movement
Tissue
A group of cells with similar structure that function together as a unit, but at a lower level than organs
Bone
Hard calcified material that makes up the skeleton
Skin
The thin layer of tissue that covers the body
Skeletal muscles
Muscles that attach to bones are connected to communicate with the central nervous system
Tendons
Tough connective tissue that attaches muscle to bone
Collagen
The primary structural protein of connective tissue
Sacromere
Contracting unit of a muscle
Contraction
The process leading to shortening and/or development of tension in a muscle
