Anatomy - knee and ankle Flashcards
What type of joint is the knee?
Bicondylar synovial joint
Describe the two articulations in the knee joint
Tibiofemoral - condyles of the femur articulate with the tibia (weight-bearing articulation)
Patellofemoral - distal anterior femur artiuclates with the patella (allows quad fem to insert over knee)
What is the function of the patella?
Minimises wear and tear on the quadriceps femoris tendon
List the bursae that are present in the knee
Suprapatella bursa
Perpatella bursa
Infrapatella bursae (deep and subcutaneous)
Semimembranosus bursa
Which bones make up the ankle joint?
Tibia
Fibula
Talus (foot)
What ligament is on the medial side of the ankle?
Deltoid ligament
List the ligaments of the ankle
Deltoid ligament Posterior and anterior tibiofibular ligaments Anterior talofibular ligament Calcaneofibular ligament (Interosseous membrane)
What type of joint is the subtalar joint?
Synovial plane joint
Which bones make up the subtalar joint?
Talus and Calcaneus (tarsal bones)
Which movements take place at the subtalar joint?
Inversion and Eversion of the foot
Which muscles produce eversion of the foot?
Muscles in the lateral compartment of the leg
- fibularis longus
- fibularis brevis
Which is the main muscle responsible for inverting the foot?
Tibialis anterior
