Anatomy dissection 10 Flashcards
What can the deltoid muscle be split up into and what is the function for each part ?
The deltoid muscle can be split up into a anterior, middle and posterior part
- Anterior - flexes the arm at the shoulder
- Middle - major abductor of the arm (takes over the subscapularis at about 15 degrees)
- Posterior - extends the arm at the shoulder
What are the main functions of the trapezium muscle ?
To elevate or depress the scapula and rotates scapula during abduction
What is the function of the levator scapulae?
Elevation of the scapula and inferior rotation of the glenoid fossa
What are the rhomboids and where do they attach ?
There is a major and minor rhomboid - they attach to the medial border of the scapula
What is the function of the rhomboids ?
Retraction of scapula and inferior rotation of glenoid fossa
What are the rotator cuff muscles of the shoulder joint and the acronym to remember them ?
- Subscapularis
- Infraspinatus
- Teres minor
- Supraspinatus
SITS
What is the function of the rotator cuff muscles ?
- Subscapularis - first 15 degrees of Abduction
- Rest (Supra and infraspinatus and teres minor) - all help stabalise shoulder joint and internally rotate it
What is the function of the teres major muscle ?
Adduction/medial rotation of the shoulder
In general what are the attachments of the rotator cuff muscles ?
Attach between the scapula proximally and the tubercles of the head of the humerus distally.
What are specifically the distal insertions of the rotator cuff muscles ?
- The supra, infraspinatus and teres minor all attach distally to the greater tubercle of the humerus
- The subscapularis distally attaches to the lesser tubercle of the humerus
What is the innervation of the supra and infraspinatus muscles ?
Suprascapular nerve
What is the innervation of the Subscapularis muscle ?
Subscapularis nerve
What is the innervation of the teres minor muscle ?
Axillary nerve
Revise the scapula osteology
What is the most common rotator cuff injury and how does it present ?
- Partial/complete tear of the supraspinatus tendon
- A patient with supraspinatus paralysis/tendon tear will throw their upper limb to the side to initiate abduction.
