Anatomy: Digestive System Flashcards
What is the part of the stomach where the esophagus and stomach meet?
Cardia
What is the top portion of the stomach?
Fundus
What is the majority of the stomach called?
The Body
What is the bottom portion of the stomach and that meets the duodenum?
Pylorus
What is the only sphincter in the stomach? (located in the exit of the stomach into duodenum)
The Pyloric Sphincter
What is another name for the Large Intestine all together?
Colon
What is the order of the Large Intestine?
- Ascending Colon
- Transverse Colon
- Descending Colon
- Sigmoid Colon
What is the pathway, in order of organs, of the entire Digestive Process?
- mouth
- pharynx
- esophagus
- stomach
- cardia
- fundus
-body
- pylorus
-pyloric sphincter - duodenum
- jejunum
- ileum
- ascending L.I.
- transverse L.I.
- descending L.I.
- Sigmoid L.I.
- Rectum
- Anus
What is the order of the small intestines?
- Duodenum
- Jejunum
- Ileum
What is the key function of the duodenum?
Chemical Digestion
What is the key function of the Jejunum?
Nutrient Absorption
What is the key function of the Ileum?
Key Vitamin Absorption
What is the main function of the Digestive System?
To convert food into energy to build and fuel the body
What is the entire structure of the Digestive System?
The Gastrointestinal Tract (Alimentary Canal)
What is the order of the 6 steps in Digestion?
Ingestion
Propulsion
Mechanical Breakdown
Chemical Digestion
Absorption
Defecation
Describe the ingestion stage of digestion
- Eating
- only occurs in the mouth
- beginning of chemical and mechanical breakdown with enzymes in saliva and chewing
Describe the propulsion stage of digestion
- movement of food through GI tract
- starts with voluntary swallowing of bolus
- continues throughout the organs with involuntary peristalsis
Describe the mechanical breakdown stage of digestion
The physical process of breaking down food to increase surface area and then mixing with enzymes
Describe the chemical digestion stage of digestion
Secreted enzymes chemically break down food molecules into their simplest form (monomers) to be absorbed into blood and transported to cells
Describe the absorption stage of digestion
The transport of the end result of our digested food through the walls of the GI tract and into the blood or lymph to be transported
Describe the defecation stage of digestion
elimination of indigestible substances through the anus
What is the mass created by chewed up food and substances?
A Bolus
What is peristalsis?
The contraction and relaxation of smooth muscles in the esophagus, stomach, and intestines to move food through the canal
What is histology?
The study of tissues
