Anatomy and physiology of Liver Flashcards
Hepatic Vein
carry blood out of the liver to inferior vena cava
Hepatic Artery
Carries oxygen rich blood into the liver
Hepatic portal vein
Nutrient rich
blood flow- from intestines, stomach,
spleen and pancreas
Bile duct
Flow of bile out of the gallbladder
Function of liver
Carbohydrate metabolism
Hepatic portal vein rich in glucose. Absorption and release of glucose by hepatocytes help with homeostasis
Liver converts glucose to glycogen and stores in liver and muscles
liver converts glycogen–> glucose in presence of glucagon
Function of liver
Fat metabolism
Hepatocytes produce bile – mixture of water, bile salts, cholesterol and bilirubin.
Bile serves three main functions:
1. Break down fats so more easily digested
2. helps absorb vitamins A,D,E,K
3. Helps remove toxins and metabolic waste - bilirubin and cholesterol
