Anatomy and Physiology Flashcards
Sutural Bones
- Small, irregular bones
- Found between the flat bones of the skull
Irregular Bones
-Have complex shapes
Short bones
-Small and thick (ankle/wrist)
Flat bones
-Thin with parallel surfaces
Long Bones
-Long and thin
Sesamoid bones
Small and flat
Structure of long bone
Diaphysis, Epiphysis, Metaphysis
Osteocytes
- maintain bone matrix
- Live in lacunae
- Do NOT divide
Two major functions of osteocytes
- Maintain protein and mineral content of matrix
- Repair damaged bone
Osteoblast
- Secrete matrix cpds.
- Osteoblasts surrounded by bone become osteocytes
What is an osteoid
Matrix produced by osteoblasts, not yet calcified to form bone
Osteoprogenitor Cells
- Divide and produce osteoblasts
- Fracture repair
Osteoclasts
- Secrete acids and protein-digesting enzymes
- Dissolve bone matrix and release stored minerals
What is homeostasis?
Bone building by osteoblasts and bone recycling by osteoclasts must balance
What causes osteoblasts to build bone?
Weight-bearing excercise
