Anatomy 3: Perineum Flashcards
What structures are included in the male perineum?
- External genitalia (urethra, scrotum and penis)
- Perineal muscles
- Anal canal
What structures are included in the female perineum?
- Female external genitalia
- Perineal muscles
- Anal canal
What perineal triangle lies inferior to pubis symphysis?
Urogenital triangle
What perineal triangle lies anteroinferior to the coccyx?
Anal triangle
What thin sheet of deep fascia stretches between right and left side of pubic arch below pubic symphysis?
Perineal membrane
What innervates external anal sphincter?
Branch of pudendal nerve
What is the main actions of external anal sphincter?
- Contrict anal canal during peristalsis
- Support anal floor
What innervates bulbospongiosus?
Branch of pudendal nerve, muscular branch of perineal nerve
What is the main actions of bulbospongiosus?
- Support pelvic floor
- Male: compress bulb of penis
- Female- assist in clitoris erection
What is the innervation of ischiocavernosus?
Branch of pudendal nerve, muscular branch of perineal nerve
What is the main actions of ischiocavernosus?
Maintain erection of penis/clitoris
What is the innervation of superficial transverse perineal muscle/deep transverse perineal muscle/ext. urethral sphincter?
Branch of pudendal nerve, muscular branch of perineal nerve
What is the action of superficial/deep transverse perineal muscle?
- Support perineal body
- Resist increases in intra-abdominal pressure
What is the action of external urethral sphincter?
Compress urethra to maintain urinary continence
What is the perineal body?
Fibromuscular mass between anus and perineal membrane
