Anatomy Flashcards
What are the 3 distinct venous systems?
Pulmonary : pulmonary veins carry oxygenated blood form the lungs to the left atrium if the heart.
Systemic : systemic veins return deoxygenated blood from periphery of the body and from the organ structures to the right atruim of the heart.
Portal: is a separate system that carries nutrients from the bowel and the spleen to the liver (where blood is purified)
Veins Mirror arteries in the whole body except for which 2 areas?
2 exceptions are
1) connection to the heart
2) one way transport from the bowels to the liver through veins alone.
Identify the 6 differences between arteries and veins
Arteries = oxygenated blood. Veins = deoxygenated blood.
Arterial pressure = 120mmHg (high)
Venous pressure = 20mmHg (low)
Arteries elastic vs veins floppy
Veins have valves , not arteries
Arteries taper in direction of flow : pressure becomes less
Veins taper opposite of flow: flow easier and valves prevent flowing back. Not need so high pressure.
Majority of blood in veins 64%.
What should we look out for when we deploy plugs in veins?
The valves as we don’t want to damage them.
