Anatomy Flashcards
Pons
Links brain and spinal cord.
Handles unconscious processes and jobs such as sleep wake cycle and breathing.
Cerebrum
Largest part of the brain controlling thought processes, hearing, speech, vision and body movements.
Cerebellum
Lower back part of the brain that coordinates muscle movement and balance.
Medulla Oblongata
Lower part of the brain near the spinal cord that controls breathing and heartbeat.
Cervical Nerves 1-8
Between every pair of vertebrae in the cervical spine.
Stimulate muscle movement in the neck, shoulders, arm and hand and provide sensation.
Thoracic Nerves 1-12
Mainly supply the skin over the chest and intrinsic back muscles of the thoracolumbar region.
Also supply some of the areas of skin over the abdominal and axilla.
Lumbar Nerves 1-5
L1 Provides sensation to the groin and genital area and contribute to the movement of the hip muscles.
L2, L3, L4 Provide sensation to the front part of the thigh and inner side of the lower legs.
L5 Provides sensation to the outer side of the lower leg and upper part of the foot and the space between the first and second toe. Controls hip, knee, foot and toe movement.
Sacral Nerves 1-5
S1 Affects the hips and groin.
S2 Affects the back of the thighs.
S3 Affect the medial buttock area.
S4 and S5 Affect the perineal area.
Coccygeal Nerve
Provide sensory and motor innervation to their respective dermatomes and myotomes.
Spinal Nerves
Nerves that transmit messages to and from the spinal cord.
Spinal Cord
Bundle of nerves that extends from the brain down the back.
Cauda Equina
Sack of nerve roots (nerves that leave the spinal cord between spaces in the bones of the spine to connect to other parts of the body) at the lower end of the spinal cord.
Brain
Complex organ that controls thought, memory, emotion, touch, motor skills, vision, breathing, temperature, hunger and every process that regulates our body.
