Abbreviations Flashcards
AD
Alzheimer Disease
Brian disorder marked by deterioration of mental capacity, irreversible dementia).
CNS
Central Nervous System
Made up of brain and spinal cord.
The spinal cord carries messages back and forth between the brain and the nerves that run throughout the body.
The brain controls how we think, learn, move and feel.
CSF
Cerebrospinal Fluid
Ultrafiltrate of plasma contained within the ventricles of the brain and the subarachnoid spaces of the cranium and spine.
CVA
Cerebrovascular Accident (Stroke)
A stroke or a brain attack, an interruption in the flow of blood to cells in the brain.
When the cells in the brain are deprived of oxygen they die.
EEG
Electroencephalography
A test that measures electrical activity in the brain using small, metal discs attached to the scalp.
Recording of the electrical activity of the brain.
LP
Lumbar Puncture
AKA Spinal Tap
A hollow needle is inserted into a space surrounding the spinal cord to withdraw cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) for analysis.
MS
Multiple Sclerosis
Destruction of the myelin sheath on nerve cells in the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord), with replacement by plaques of sclerotic hard tissue.
TENS
Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation
A battery powered device delivers stimulation to nerves to relieve acute and chronic pain.
TIA
Transient Ischemic Attack
(Temporary interference with blood supply to the brain); mini stroke
