What is the Epiglottis?
The flap at the base of the tongue that prevents objects from entering the trachea.
What is the peritoneum?
The serous membrane that forms the lining of the abdominal cavity. Not to be confused with perineum.
What is the sternocleidomastoid muscle?
The largest and most superficial muscle on the front portion of the neck, that controls movement of the head.
What are the Maxillae?
The bones of the upper jaw, forming the dominant portion of the face. Singular: maxilla
What are the zygomae?
The bones of the skull that form the prominence of the cheek, and articulate with the maxilla. Singular: zygoma
What is the mastoid process?
The prominent bony mass at the base of the skull, about 1 inch posterior to the external opening of the ear.
What is the tragus?
The small, fleshy bulge on the ear, immediately anterior to the ear canal.
What is the mediastinum?
The area in the chest, between the lungs, that houses the heart, the trachea, the esophagus and the great vessels.
What is the mesentery?
The membranous organ that attaches the intestines to the abdominal wall and holds them in place.
What do the iliac arteries immediately branch off into?
The femoral arteries
What is the parietal pleura?
The outer membrane of the pleura, that lines the chest wall, diaphragm and heart.
What is the visceral pleura?
The same inner membrane of the pleura that covers the surface of the lungs.
