Anatomy Flashcards
Heart Characteristics :
- Lies in the center in between the lungs, and is protected by ribs & sternum
- Weighs 10 oz
- Beats 60-100x per min
- Outputs 5L of blood per min
What surrounds the heart ?
The PERICARDIUM is a membrane that surrounds the heart like a protective sack
What three layers consist within the PERICARDIUM?
- EPICARDIUM : Outermost layer that protects the heart
- MYOCARDIUM : Middle layer that’s muscular and creates contractions
- ENDOCARDIUM : Innermost layer that’s smooth and surrounds the surfaces of the chamber of hearts
What consists in the CHAMBERS OF THE HEART?
- Has 4 chambers
- ATRIUMS : Upper left and right chambers
- VENTRICLES : Lower left and right chambers
- Left receives oxygenated blood & right receives deoxygenated blood
What consists of the 5 GREAT BLOOD VESSELS?
- Superior Vena Cava
- Inferior Vena Cava
- Pulmonary Artery
- Pulmonary Veins
- Aorta
SUPERIOR VENA CAVA:
Returns blood from the upper portion of body
INFERIOR VENA CAVA:
Returns blood from lower portion of body
PULMONARY VEIN:
Carriers oxygenated blood to the left atrium
AORTA:
- Largest artery in the body
* Carriers oxygenated blood from the left ventricle to the ENTIRE BODY
List the four major parts of the circulatory system:
The heart, veins, artery, and blood
PULMONARY CIRCULATION:
When blood receives oxygen through the lungs
SYSTEMIC CIRCULATION:
When blood flows throughout the body carrying nutrients and oxygen
What are the two phases of heartbeat?
- Contraction Phase = Systole
- Relaxation Phase = Diastole
- Atrium Contracts as Ventricles Relax
CONTRACTION (SYSTOLE) :
When atriums/ventricles are pushing blood out
RELAXATION (DIASTOLE):
When atrium/ventricles relax to receive blood
