ANATOMY Flashcards
what are suspensory ligaments of the breast?
connective tissue in the breast that help maintain structural integrity.
what are areola?
the ring of pigmented skin surrounding a nipple.
what are lactiferous sinuses?
an expansion in a lactiferous duct at the base of the nipple in which milk accumulates.
what are lactiferous ducts?
ducts that converge and form a branched system connecting the nipple to the lobules of the mammary gland- responsible for delivering milk to the surface of the skin
what’s the blood supply to the breasts?
internal thoracic artery and lateral thoracic artery
why is lymphatic drainage of the breast clinically important?
its a common route by which cancer spreads from the breast
outline lymphatic drainage of the breast?
about 75% drains into axillary nodes and the rest drains into the parasternal nodes along the internal thoracic artery
what’s the function of the pelvic diaphragm?
forms the muscular floor od the pelvic cavity so supports the pelvic viscera
also resists the rise in intra-pelvic pressure that occurs when abdominal wall muscles contract during expulsive efforts
what are the muscles forming the pelvic diaphragm collectively called?
levator ani muscle
remember the coccyges muscle too
what makes up the levator ani?
the pubococcygeus, the iliococcygeus, and the puborectalis.
what is the sischioanal fossa?
a space filled with fat lateral to the anal canal and just below the pelvic diaphragm
what is the perineum?
made up of 2 triangles, the anterior urogenital and posterior anal triangles, its the are between anus and scrotum/vulva
which muscle is more lateral, bulbospongiosus or ischiocavernosus?
ischiocavernosus
what is the perineal body?
a fibro-muscular structure located in the midline of the perineum.
what is the round ligament?
a pair of cordlike structures in the pelvis that help support the uterus by connecting the front of the uterus to the groin region
