Ventral VS. Dorsal
Ventral: front
Dorsal: back
Ventral is the position towards the front of the body
Dorsal is the position towards the back of the body
Anterior VS. Posterior
Anterior : front
Posterior : back
Anterior is the position towards the front of the body
Posterior is the position towards the back of the body
Medial VS. Lateral
Medial: closer to midline
Lateral: further from midline
Medial is the position that is closer to the midline
Lateral is the position that is further away from the midline
Cranial VS. Caudal
Cranial: head end
Caudal: tail end
Cranial is the position that pertains to the head end
Caudal is the position to the tail end
Proximal VS. Distal
Proximal: closer to the midpoint out of attachment
Distal: further from the point of attachment
Proximal is the position located closer to the point of attachment
Distal is the position located further away from the point of attachment
Internal VS. External
Internal: closer inside the body
External: closer to the outside
Internal is located closer toward the inside of the the body
External is located closer toward the outside of the body (doesn’t necessarily mean outside of skin, just closer to the bottom layer of skin.)
Parietal VS. Visceral
Parietal: outside walls making up a body cavity
Visceral: inside or organs contained within the body cavity
Parietal is pertaining to the outside or walls making up a body cavity
Visceral is pertaining to the inside or organs contained within a body cavity
Peripheral VS. Central
Peripheral: further away from the center
Central: core of the center
Peripheral is the position located away from the center
Central is pertaining to the core of the center
Superficial VS. Deep
Superficial: closer to the surface of the body
Deep: further or deeper inside the body
Superficial is the location closer to the surface of the body.
Deep is the location further or deeper inside the body.
Superior VS. Inferior
Superior: closer to the top of the body
Inferior: closer to the bottom of the body
Superior is located closer to the top of the body
Inferior is located closer to the bottom of the body
