Anatomy 1 Flashcards
where are primordial follicles found in the ovary?
at the periphery of the cortex
What type of oocyte do Pimordial follicles contain?
Primary oocyte
What cell type are found around the primary oocyte in a primordial follicle?
Single layer of squamous follicular cells
How do primordial follicles differ from primary follicles?
Although they both have primary oocytes, primary follicles contain more than one layer of follicular cells. The cell type is also different: cuboidal, stratified follicular cells
in a primary follicle, what are the follicular cells now called?
granulosa cells
What feature identifies secondary follicles?
presence of antrum (fluid filled cavity)
In a histology slide, how can the theca interna be distinguished from theca externa?
Theca interna has many blood vessels and stain red
theca externa has many collagen fibres and will stain blue using a Mallory stain
How do granulosa cells and theca interna work together to synthesise oestrogen?
theca interna makes androgens from cholesterol (the cells are closer to blood vessels and can take up LDL to obtain cholesterol.)
Granulosa cells contain aromatase which converts androgen to oestrogen
after ovulation, the mature follicle becomes corpus luteum. What happens to the granulosa and theca cells?
they become lutein cells
type of epithelium in vagina?
non-keratinised stratified squamous epithelium
what mucosal secretions lubricate the vagina?
Servical mucus lubricates vagina
Bartholin’s glands secrete a little mucus
How do epithelial cells create an acidic vaginal environment?
They contain large stores of glycogen which produce organic acids on decomposition
what are the 3 layers of the uterus?
Inner endometrium
Smooth muscle myometrium
Outer serosa perimetrium
what epithelium lines the endometrium?
simple columnar epithelium
what effect does oestrogen have on uterus cells?
causes them to proliferate
