Anatomical Terms Flashcards
Appendicular Skeleton
Bone of pelvis, shoulder, girdle, arms, legs
Axial skeleton
Skull and spine
Bone
Connective tissue composed of osteocytes
Compact bone
Tight solid outer tissue that forms bone exterior
Spongy bone
Mesh like bone found in interior of bones surrounding medullary cavity
Medullary cavity
Where bone marrow is stored
Long bones
Elongated bones of the arms and legs
Short bones
Square-shaped bones of wrists and ankles
Flat bones
Thin, flattened bones of the ribs and shoulder blades, pelvis, skulls
Irregular bones
Bones of vertebrae and face
Sesamoid bones
Round bones found near joints
Epiphysis
Wide ends of long bone
Diaphysis
Shaft of long bone
Metaphysis
Growth zone between epiphysis and diaphysis during development of long bone
Endosteum
Membrane lining medullary cavity of bone
Bone marrow
Soft tissue within medullary cavity
Red bone marrow
Form red blood cells, some white, and platelets. Found in cavities of bones.
Yellow bone marrow
Replaces red bone marrow in adult bones. Stores lipids and is inactive in forming blood cells
Periosteum
Fibrous, vascular membrane that covers bone
Articulate cartilage
Gristle-like substance on bones where they articulate
Articulation
Place where two bones come together
Joint
Point where two bones come together
Bursa
Fibrous sac between certain tendons and bones that is lined with a synovial membrane that secretes synovial fluid
intervertebral disc
Flat plate-like structure composed of an outer fibrous part that surrounds a central gelatinous mass between the vertebrae that reduces friction.
